Foundation for California to Host Landmark Conference on Tribal Sovereignty
The Foundation for California, a leading non-profit public policy research center, will be hosting "Tribal Sovereignty: Legal Trends & Directions", a landmark one-day conference featuring lively and robust discussion about the current state and future of Native American tribal sovereignty.
At no point in American history have the many legal, economic and social intricacies surrounding tribal sovereignty played a more significant role in the court of public opinion, the halls of government or our nation's legal system. In recognizing this significance, the Foundation for California has gathered many of the most respected judicial and academic minds in the country for this unique event.
The conference is scheduled for Wednesday, March 12, 2008, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Walter A. Slowinski Courtroom at The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, 3600 John McCormack Road, NE in Washington, DC. Continental breakfast, lunch and refreshments will be served.
"Tribal Sovereignty: Legal Trends & Directions" will include fascinating panel discussions on issues critical to Native Americans today, including tribal sovereignty and labor, tribal sovereignty precedents in American law, and strategies to safeguard tribal sovereignty for future generations.
Esteemed conference participants will include among others Ralph Rossum, Salvatori Professor of American Constitutionalism at Claremont McKenna College, The Honorable Susan A. Ehrlich from the Arizona Court of Appeals, The Honorable Rebecca Irving, Chief Judge of the Passamaquoddy Tribal Court, Kathryn R.L. Rand, Co-Director of the Institute for the Study of Tribal Gaming Law and Policy, and Reid Peyton Chambers, a Partner with the law firm of Sonosky, Chambers, Sachse, Endreson & Perry, LLP.
The conference also will feature a lunchtime keynote address from the Honorable Randall R. Rader, Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals For The Federal Circuit.
"It is rare to have such a gathering of judicial and academic giants in the fields of Indian and federal law," stated Dr. Alfred Balitzer, Chairman of the Board of Foundation for California. "This will be an extraordinary forum for the exploration of tribal sovereignty today as well as the ramifications of federal policy and law on Native Americans well into the future. This event should not be missed."
